The launch of Apex Legends was a surprise when it debuted in early 2019. Apex Legends has skyrocketed into one of the top games and Battle Royales in the industry. There is so much to credit to the game’s success from characters to backstories taken from the Titanfall series to the massive support from the community. It was safe to say Apex Legends was at the forefront of the BR genre. That was until a few game-altering updates seemed to have ruined the game for many players. The latest being Skill Based Match Making (SBMM) added during the Duos update which has led many to believe SBMM is ruining Apex Legends.
What is SBMM?
SBMM, or better known as Skill Based Match Making, refers to a set of players playing at a certain skill level. In regards to Apex Legends, it was confirmed by one of the devs that SBMM would focus on gunplay metrics. This would mean it would take into account kills & accuracy instead of wins. The dev also mentioned the SBMM in casual play has nothing to do with ranked.
SBMM will become the norm for most MP games, as there is indisputable evidence through data that it helps out something like 80-90% of the community with retention for most of those games… which hurts us 10%’ers, I know. Still though, ours might need some tuning potentially

Is SBMM Ruining Apex Legends?
While many players have voiced their opinions on recent updates such as the Charge Rifle & now most recently the Peacekeeper and SBMM it may seem that there is no other option than to leave Apex Legends. Many players have taken to Reddit and Twitter to show their displeasure with the current game.
This is only a small set of examples but it shows the impact on the community. On the other hand, there are a great number of players who mention that they don’t see the impact of SBMM in their lobbies. This has caused quite a stir in the community and as of late has seemed like more casual players of the game are leaving due to SBMM. There are also other aspects to the game that have caused plenty of players to leave like the Peacekeeper updates.
Respawn still has some fine-tuning to do on SBMM. Whether it will be taken out of the game or not is up to Respawn but for now, it looks like it’s staying.
